Doyle is best known as an accomplished mandolin player, vocalist, producer, and leader of the 5-man group Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver. Doyle began his career as a banjo player with Jimmy Martin and the Sunny Mountain Boys. He played mandolin for J.D. Crowe and the Country Gentlemen before launching his own band, Foxfire, which preceded Quicksilver. He is also well known for his mandolin contributions to a group of albums known as the "Bluegrass Album Band" series.
