EXERCISE 15 - EXERCISES IN THE KEY OF A
The song "Boil Em Cabbage Down" is in the key of A. This is a very common key for tunes on the mandolin and fiddle. Here are some exercises to help you become more familiar with the notes in the key of A.

mandolin tablature
This exercise is a good one to practice over and over. It is the A major scale and when playing in the key of A almost every note you play will be one of these scale notes. As before, remember to play down-ups with your pickstrokes. Here is a free video lesson called "What Is A Major Scale?" I made which explains major scales.

EXERCISE 16 - THE SONG "SALLY GOODEN"
This song is usually played in the key of A. Like many fiddle-type tunes, it is divided into two parts... the A part and the B part. Each part is played twice, AABB.

Once you have this version of Sally Gooden under your belt you might like to get my video download lesson "Sally Gooden - Tune & Variations" which teaches 4 versions of the tune "Sally Gooden." There is also a free video lesson called "Sally Gooden Rhythm which teaches the bluegrass style chop chords for the tune. We haven't talked about chords yet, so make a mental note of that lesson and come back to it later if it's too difficult right now.
